Drilling my loose pearls for jewelry designs
One of my original designs incorporates dupioni silk with fresh water pearls. It is a lovely, sophisticated designed worn by many stylish women through out the country. I love silk. Dupioni silk is so luscious and beautiful. It comes in many gorgeous colors. I have also used Dupioni silk that was woven with stripes. Most of my silk was purchased in the garment district in New York City. There are many wonder fabric stores around 39th and 8th Ave.
My silk pearl designs usually have several graduated strands. My silk is cut on the bias for a good drape and fit. I try to use a good size pearl that will show up nicely on the silk necklace.
I drill all the pearls by hand because you need a very large hold in order to pass the silk through properly. I have used this technique for over 15 years. Today, they sell fresh water pearls with large holes. It seems to be popular for stringing leather and pearls. I have always drilled my own pearls because I need an exact size hole to fit the silk strip which is usually about 1 1/2 inches.
